Cormorants, shags, and anhingas are all water birds, commonly found along coasts and inshore aquatic habitats. They are diving birds who will pursue prey underwater using their feet for propulsion. Unlike other aquatic birds, these species do not have oily feathers: an adaptation to reduce their buoyancy for swimming effectively underwater. As a result, their feathers can get more waterlogged than other birds, and so you'll often see them resting with their wings outstretched, drying their feathers off.
