Great skuas (Stercorarius skua) are aggressive scavengers, predators, and kleptoparasites, meaning they will mug other birds for their food, or even kill them if the occasion presents itself. They were a common sight behind our fishing trawlers in the North Minch (Outer Hebrides, Scotland). In this sequence, the skua is targeting a great black-backed gull, which just manages to make its escape.

A cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) on a rocky shore on the west of Scotland. because shags and cormorants are underwater pursuit predators, their feathers lack the buoyant oil used by other birds for waterproofing. Instead, these animals have to spend time after dives to dry their feathers and will often be seen in this characteristic posture as they dry off.
