This is a composite image showing a gannet diving into the sea for prey just off the Ayrshire coast (that's Ailsa Craig in the background). These birds can hit the water at speeds up to 60 miles per hour and have reinforced skulls to protect them from the force of the impact. They also have no nostrils to stop the water going up them!
The bird turned 90 degrees between frames 3 and 4 and hits the water side-on to the camera. The composite was made from 6 photographs using Photohop software.
