SBC009: Drying off - Shags and Cormorants
A cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) drying off its feathers in the wind at St Andrews beach. Unlike other seabirds, cormorants don't have oil in their feathers for waterproofing as it makes them too buoyant for diving and swimming underwater. As a result, their feathers get waterlogged and must be dried out before they can fly.
