SWE041: The Chase

This shot was taken on a beautifully calm evening while I was working at the Sven Loven Centre for Marine Science in Tjarno, Sweden. We'd seen shoals of small mackerel (Scomber scrombus) in the bay most evenings for about a week, but one evening it was particularly calm and the fish were hunting close to the piers, so I went down with my camera to try and photograph some of them jumping as the sun went down. After a bit of trial and error, I got the hang of tracking the fish swimming just below the surface and eventually managed to catch one mid-leap. What I didn't see initially was the sandeel (probably Ammodytes tobianus) that had leapt out the water as well in a desperate bid to escape!
