Two Dunlin (Calidris alpina) foraging for worms at Troon beach. Dunlin feed in soft sediments by using their beaks to probe for animals relatively close to the surface. Birds such as the oystercatcher and curlew have much longer beaks which are specialised for feeding deeper in the sediment, reducing competition between the different species.
